PROGRAM
Welcome to Broken Hill for the celebration of the centenary of its iconic former Synagogue. Here is the daily program of events. We are sure you are going to have a great time!
ON ARRIVAL
Once you are settled into your accommodation please collect your information bag and name badge at the Broken Hill Historical Society research centre at the rear of the Synagogue at 165 Wolfram Street Broken Hill.
If you have registered for the guided town walk or guided cemetery walk you will be booked into times for those walks until they are full. Self-guided walks are also possible. The information bag will have the walking tour maps together with a town map, as well as tourist literature on interesting places to visit and where to eat in Broken Hill.

7.00pm Kabbalat Shabbat service in the Synagogue, 165 Wolfram Street
Saturday 27 November
8.45-10.30am Shabbat morning service in the Synagogue, 165 Wolfram Street. An orthodox service led by Howard Goldenberg and Richard Lew. Please bring prayer books and kippot (head covering). This is very likely to be an overflow service. The Synagogue takes only 100-110 people. Shaded seating outside the Synagogue will be available for overflow numbers.
10.30- 11.00am Kiddush (refreshments) at the Synagogue.
8.45-11.00am Salvation Army Hall opposite the Synagogue on Wolfram Street open for cold drinks in air-conditioned comfort.
9.30am, 10.00am Guided walk of central Broken Hill led by volunteer guides of the Broken Hill Visitors Centre. A walking tour pointing out places of general and Jewish interest. Maximum 25 people each group. You must be registered for this tour and indicate your preferred time when
collecting your information bag at the Synagogue. You will then be assigned to a group. Bring hat. Water. Sun screen. Walk begins at the Broken Hill Visitors Centre, corner of Blende and Bromide Street, tel: 8080 3560.
Saturday 27 NovembeR cont.
3.00 - 5.00pm Display of Jewish artifacts and memorabilia in the Synagogue at 165 Wolfram Street. View historical photos, see items assembled for the centenary celebration and enjoy the premises maintained as a Jewish Museum by the Broken Hill Historical Society.
3.00 - 5.00pm Salvation Army Hall opposite the Synagogue on Wolfram Street open for afternoon tea and refreshments in air-conditioned comfort.

SUNDAY 28 NOVEMBER
8.30am, 9.00am, 9.30am, 10 am.
Guided cemetery walk in the Jewish section of the cemetery, Rakow Street. Maximum 10-12 people each group. You must be registered for this walk and indicate your preferred time when collecting your information bag at the Synagogue. You will be assigned to a group. You can walk or drive to the main entrance of the cemetery on Rakow Street in the north -west corner of Broken Hill. From the cemetery entrance it is approximately an 8 minute, 500 metre walk to the Jewish section following the signs.
At the Jewish section of the cemetery you will be met by Ellen Francis, Robyn Dryen or Leon Mann who will guide your group and provide a brief 20 minute overview of the Jewish section and stories of some of the people buried there. Bring hat. Water. Sun screen.
The same guided cemetery tour will be available on Monday 29 November at 9.00am and 9.30am if the Sunday walks are full.
11 - 11.45am Book launch Jews of the Outback: The Centenary of the Broken Hill Synagogue 1910-2010; editors: Suzanne Rutland OAM, Leon Mann, and Margaret Price. Book launch by Professor Colin Tatz AO. Books available for purchase at the launch. Refreshments served.

SUNDAY 28 NovembeR cont.
3.45 - 5.00pm The Centenary Event outside the Synagogue at 165 Wolfram Street.
Please be seated by 3.45 pm. There is seating capacity for 200 people and some shade.
The event will begin at 4 pm sharp and will be recorded by ABC television. It will include a welcome to country by the traditional aboriginal owners of the land, brief welcome speeches by Ross Mawby, president of the Broken Hill Historical Society, Wincen Cuy, Mayor of Broken Hill, Fran Mackinnon of the National Trust, Robyn Dryen, descendant of the founding fathers, and Leon Mann who was born in Broken Hill. The centenary event will also include a partial reenactment of the 1910 foundation stone ceremony, the Country Singers choir, and drum and fife band from the Burke Ward primary school.
Bring hat. Indeed get into the spirit of things by wearing a bowler hat, top hat, boater, pith helmet, bonnet or other headgear of the early 1900s!
Please note that Wolfram Street between Bromide Street and Sulphide Street will be closed to traffic on Sunday afternoon.
3.00 - 5pm The Salvation Army hall opposite the Synagogue will be open for cold drinks and cool air.
6.00 - 7pm Mayor's Civic Reception at the Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery, 404-408 Argent Street.
From 6.00pm Musicians Club at 276 Crystal Street will be open for drinks, snacks and meals.

MONDAY 29 NOVEMBER
9.00am, 9.30am Subject to number interested. Guided cemetery walk in the Jewish section of the cemetery, Rakow Street. Maximum 10-12 people each group. As per Sunday morning cemetery walk. You must be registered for the walk. Bring hat. Water. Sun screen.
10.00am Guided walk of central Broken Hill led by volunteer guides of the Broken Hill Visitors Centre. As per the Saturday morning town walk. You must be registered. Walk begins at the Broken Hill Visitors Centre, corner of Blende and Bromide Street, tel: 8080 3560
